Explorer Program 2007

The Redding Police Department Explorer Post is a volunteer organization through which young people, 14-21 years of age, are trained in many aspects of law enforcement. The program is chartered as a law enforcement Explorer Post with the Boy Scouts of America. The goals of Explorer Post #93 are to train young women and men for a future in law enforcement and to provide quality candidates for police cadets, community service officers, police officers, and other law enforcement related positions within the community.

A structured program with the explorers has been established to promote responsibility. Expectations instilled in Explorer members are high morals, an acceptable grade point average, good judgment, and active community involvement.

Redding Police Explorers donated approximately 2,010 hours in 2003, 2,519 hours in 2004, assisting the police department in various community activities. Events have included Kool April Nights, the annual Air Show, 4th of July Fireworks, D.A.R.E. Camp Security, and many more.

An annual awards night is held to honor the Explorers and the dedication they have shown to the Redding Police Department Explorer Program and the community. The highest award presented to an explorer is the "Explorer of the Year".

The Redding Police Department Explorer Program also provides non-hazardous law enforcement experience to those young people who have demonstrated sufficient interest by active participation in the Post activities. These activities include, but are not limited to, traffic control, Ride-Along program, and assistance to the Police Department in auxiliary services (such as a search for a missing child or the collection of evidence from a crime scene). Other fun activities the Explorers participate in are group camping trips, pizza parties, and a Christmas party.

Explorers meet biweekly to discuss policies, procedures, rules, and regulations of the Explorer Post; guest speakers provide presentations, and uniform inspections are occasionally conducted.

In checking records, approximately 10% to 15% of the Explorers that leave the program become full-time paid police officers within the state of California.
