ABOUT THE POSITION


Wage Range: $15.50 - $19.78 per hour.

The City of Redding is establishing an eligibility list to fill a vacancy, as well as subsequent vacancies that occur during the life of the list. Under general supervision, perform a variety of technical and complex clerical tasks in support of Police Department operations and activities. Employees in this classification may be assigned to serve as a back-up supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Perform technical and clerical support functions; type records, reports, correspondence; transcribe police reports and notes; operate computer system to enter/retrieve data; send and receive information using State and Federal telecommunication systems; screen, sort and distribute mail; fingerprint prospective employees and general public; assist dispatch with non-emergency phone calls; provide court testimony as required; receive and respond to citizens’ questions and complaints within established guidelines; distribute calls for officer assistance to communications center; provide information and police reports to other law enforcement agencies, public and private agencies, and citizens; collect fees, balance receipts; process warrants; process traffic, criminal and civil subpoenas; prepare complaint packets and documentation for District Attorney’s office and court; train or assist in the training of employees; coordinate and review the work of other employees as assigned; and perform other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Modern office practices and procedures; effective customer service skills; filing systems and records management; record keeping practices and procedures; office equipment, personal computers and word processing operations, adding machine, and copy and facsimile machines; effective interpersonal communication skills; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; and basic arithmetical calculations.

Ability to: Interact effectively with the public and employees; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; perform technical and complex clerical work; exercise discretion, good judgement and make sound decisions; work independently, prioritize work and coordinate several activities simultaneously; understand, interpret and apply policies, procedures, laws or legal documents; understand and follow verbal and written directions consistently; present a professional image; handle confidential and highly sensitive information; and learn laws and regulations governing the release of police department reports and information.

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the various job functions is qualifying; typical education would include a high school diploma, or equivalent. Typical experience would include one year of prior clerical experience, coursework, or training.

Special Requirements: Successfully complete a detailed background investigation. Willing to work weekends, differing shifts, and holidays.

TYPING REQUIREMENT

CANDIDATES MUST ATTACH A VALID TYPING CERTIFICATE WITH A NET SPEED OF AT LEAST 45 WPM AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION. Certification will be accepted from any one of the following agencies: Express Personnel Services, Job Training Center, SMART Business Resource Center, and Spherion. The certification must contain the NET words per minute. Certificates over two years old will not be accepted. The City reserves the right to verify typing certification.

Veterans Credit: Veterans who have received an honorable discharge from the military service and receive a passing score on the examination will have 2 points added to their final examination score. To obtain this credit, veterans MUST provide a copy of the DD214, indicating honorable discharge, WITH EACH EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE.

Test Requirements: The examination process may consist of a written examination and interview. Candidates must successfully complete and pass each and every element to be placed on the eligibility list.

NOTE: INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. MEETING THE ANNOUNCED REQUIREMENTS DOES NOT GUARANTEE SELECTION INTO THE EXAMINATION PROCESS. APPLICATIONS WILL BE REVIEWED BY SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS WHO WILL DETERMINE THOSE BEST QUALIFIED TO BE TESTED.
